The city of Colima (coh-LEE-mah)
is the capital of the State of Colima, which is the third-smallest state in Mexico. It is the third oldest city in Mexico founded by the Spanish in the 1500’s after Mexico City and Veracruz.
The city of Colima is currently experiencing very rapid growth, with an urban population of over 230,000. Colima is known as “the city of palms” and has a semi tropical climate. A large, active volcano can be easily seen 20 or 30 miles to the north of the city.
The state is located in an area of the country identified as Mexico’s “Heart of Darkness.” It is called this because of the low number of evangelical Christian believers and the heart shape of the region. Colima is situated in the West Central Region of Mexico. The predominant religion is Catholicism, and only about 2 percent of the people report being born-again Christians.
